Yes! All transfers and amendments to your Event Registration must be completed 2 months before the event – Monday July 1, 2019. Please note: after this date no transfers or changes can be made to your entry.

How do I improve my odds of starting with friends?

You will be asked to enter a Team Name during the registration process. If you wish to ride with friends, agree a Team Name and enter it on the entry form. Make sure all riders enter exactly the same Team Name and we will do our best to put you in the same start wave.

If you’ve already entered and didn’t put a Team Name or want to edit your Team Name, login to your Active account here and click ‘Edit Registration’.

You have until two months prior to the event (July 1, 2019) to add / edit your Team Name.

Can I ride for charity?

You can make your miles matter by securing your place through our Lead Charity, Prostate Cancer UK. Click HERE for more information.

If you decide to secure a General, Fast Track or Business 100 place, you can still raise funds for a charity of your choice.

What's the withdrawal policy?

BIKE INFORMATION

What type of bikes are not allowed?

The following are forbidden at Vélo North for health and safety reasons: bikes with disc wheels, recumbent bicycles with full fairing or tricycle configuration, electronic bikes not compliant with current UK/EU legal requirements for ‘electrically assisted pedal cycles’ (EAPCs), unicycles, elliptical cycles, penny farthings, tricycles, quad cycles, BMX bikes, fixed gear bikes / singlespeeds / fixies (allowed with two independent brakes and a freehub) and handbikes / cycles. Any unconventional handlebars including triathlon bars, aero bars, clip-ons, prayer bars, Spinaci bars and cow bars, handlebar extensions bars without Bar end plugs fitted; and any other items which the Organiser considers may be a danger to the safety of other participants.

Can I ride my e-bike at Vélo North?

For the first time in the Vélo Series, e-bikes will be permitted on all distances at Vélo North. Only those cycles that comply with current UK/EU legal requirements for ‘electrically assisted pedal cycles’ (EAPCs) are permitted in the sportive. EAPCs still require the rider to pedal and the electric motor, with a maximum power of 250 watts, cannot provide assistance when travelling at more than 25 km/h (15.5mph). Participants using e-bikes must still meet the requirements for entering as per the Event T&Cs.

If you wish to participate in Vélo North on an e-bike, you must inform us by emailing hello@velonorth.com (stating your full name) prior to purchasing your entry. These details are required so you can be placed in a suitable start wave for safety reasons.

Can I ride my recumbent at Vélo North?

Recumbent Cycles (not full fairing or tricycle configuration) with a sufficient visible rear marker that is 2m in height will be permitted on all distances at Vélo North. If you wish to participate on a recumbent, you must inform us by emailing hello@velonorth.com (stating your full name and image of recumbent) prior to purchasing your entry. These details are required so you can be placed in a suitable start wave for safety reasons.

Is it possible to purchase insurance for the event?

Can someone collect my Rider Pack on my behalf on Saturday August 31?

If you can’t personally collect your Rider Pack on Saturday August 31, you can send someone else on your behalf. They will need your Rider Number (issued approximately two weeks before the event), a photocopy of your ID (e.g. driving licence or passport) and a signed letter of consent. One person can collect on behalf of multiple riders, providing they have everything listed above.

THE RIDE

Where will the ride Start and Finish?

Vélo North will start and finish in Durham City Centre, exact locations will be released in due course!

When will I know my exact start time?

You will find out your start time approximately 2 weeks prior to the event. You can move back to a later wave but not forward to an earlier wave. You do not need to inform us if you decide to move back to a later wave.

What is the minimum speed riders must maintain?

To comply with road closure timings, riders must maintain an average speed of 16 kilometres/10 miles per hour. This includes any stops at Pit Stops and Water Stations. The first riders will depart at 06:00, and all riders must be across the finish line by 17:30. A sweep vehicle system will be in place to collect any riders who fall behind this time limit or otherwise cannot continue due to injury, fatigue or mechanical failure.

What food and drink will be available at the Rider Pit Stops?

Rider Pit Stops will be stocked with both sweet and savoury bites, fruit, water and HIGH5 energy products (gels and drink). Although Pit Stops will endeavour to cater for all, if riders have specific nutritional or dietary requirements, we strongly recommend that they bring with them suitable sustenance for their ride. Exact Pit Stop locations will be available in the Rider Info Guide, published online closer to the event.

What do you recommend people bring with them on the day?

We highly advise all riders carry two water bottles with them at all times. Our well-equipped Domestiques will be out on the route to help riders. However, we recommend you bring the basics including items such as two x inner tubes, mini pump, tyre levers and a multi-tool, which are all useful and needed.

ROAD CLOSURES

Where can I find out more details about road closures?

Due to the scale and numbers participating in Vélo North, road closures will be implemented across the full route to facilitate the safe passage of the participants. The route has been carefully considered and selected through a partnership of all local authorities, emergency services and transport operators to minimise the inconvenience of the necessary road closures. Emergency Services will be operating as usual and the public should use normal protocol in the case of an emergency.

Specific Road Closure information can be found by clicking here. We will do all we can to provide you with more information on how you can best navigate your way around the road closures. If you have any queries regarding the route and subsequent road closures, please email route@velonorth.com .
